Every year on UJC Mitzvah Day, over 150 UJC members come together to create small miracles in Hong Kong by volunteering at a variety of worthwhile organizations and charities.

On a Sunday in December, we gather at the JCC for breakfast and a kick-off, and then divide up into teams to volunteer throughout Hong Kong.  There is always a wide variety of volunteering opportunities— over the years Mitzvah Day Partners have included Habitat for Humanity, The Boys’ & Girls’ Club, ImpactHK, China Coast Community, Ark Eden, Hong Kong Dog Rescue, Soap Cycling, Feeding Hong Kong, Sunshine Action, The Red Cross, Lizzie Bee Foundation, Fu Hong Society, Pathfinders, Plastic Free Seas, Christian Action’s Refugee Centre, The Amber Foundation, and Clean-Up Hong Kong Trails –- so everyone, from 2 to 82, can take part in some hands-on Tikkun Olam.

The UJC NETTs  (Native English Teen Tutors) program is for teens who have celebrated B’nai Mitzvah and want to engage in meaningful Tikkun Olam. Participants also get to enjoy Shabbat lunch, engage in Jewish learning, and spend time together.

UJC NETTs travel to Tin Shui Wai five or six times during the academic year where they meet with the local teens at HLC (Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Lee Shau Kee College) and spend the morning helping in the school’s Extended English Program.  After each session of tutoring, teens from The UJC gather at the Rabbi’s flat for Shabbat lunch and a learning session that will provides a Jewish context for the important work they are doing and enables them to understand their role in Tikkun Olam.

Fill the UJC Time Capsule

To help celebrate the last 30 years, and to leave a legacy for the next 30, we created a UJC Time Capsule to be opened in 2060.  We welcomed the inclusion of letters, photos or any materials that help add richness to the story of your UJC experience, as well as “Letters for Tomorrow” to record your hopes and thoughts for the future UJC family.

We provided envelopes to collect your small items, photos and notes, you were welcome to include any items that fit within the dimensions of a closed letter (approx. 5 ½” x 8 ½”).  We asked that no delicate/breakable objects or organic elements such as pressed flowers, a lock of hair, food or other consumable items be included in order to ensure personal safety and the integrity of the preservation-minded environment.  We also asked that envelopes are able to close relatively flat in order to allow space for all time capsule contents.

An Exciting Event for Bookhers and all UJC Members on Erev Shavuot
Thursday, 21st May at 8:00 PM

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 8 PM Hong Kong time, we will hold a special UJC Bookhers discussion of Simon Wiesenthal’s The Sunflower, which explores issues of repentance and forgiveness. As our program takes place on the eve of the festival of Shavuot, we will follow the custom of a late-night study session, called the “Tikkun Leyl Shavuot.” We will begin our session with a brief ritual led by Rabbi Kudan and Cantor Shore and then engage in lively discussion. After introductory remarks, “a framing of the issues,” the participants will be invited to choose a breakout session in French or English. (other language breakout groups can be created upon request.) Those attending in person will be treated to an array of dairy treats, also traditional for the festival.

THE SUNFLOWER CHALLENGE:

You are a prisoner in a concentration camp. A dying Nazi soldier asks for your forgiveness. What would you do?

World-famous Simon Wiesenthal recounts this real encounter and then asks, “Had he done the right thing? What would you have done in his place?” In this important book, fifty-three distinguished men and women respond to Wiesenthal’s questions. They are theologians, political leaders, writers, jurists, psychiatrists, human rights activists, Holocaust survivors, and victims of attempted genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, China and Tibet.

Originally written in German and French and later translated into English, The Sunflower is uniquely suited to our community. The book is available in multiple languages. Copies are available at Amazon.com.
