An Exciting Event for Bookhers and all UJC Members on Erev Shavuot
Thursday, 21st May at 8:00 PM

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 8 PM Hong Kong time, we will hold a special UJC Bookhers discussion of Simon Wiesenthal’s The Sunflower, which explores issues of repentance and forgiveness. As our program, available in French and English, will take place on the eve of the festival of Shavuot, we will follow the custom of a late-night study session, called the “Tikkun Leyl Shavuot.” We will begin our session with a brief ritual led by Rabbi Kudan and Cantor Shore and then engage in lively discussion, followed by an array of dairy treats, also traditional for the festival.

You can join in person at the Rabbi’s apartment or you can join on Zoom. Please RSVP to ujc@ujc.org.hk.

THE SUNFLOWER CHALLENGE:

You are a prisoner in a concentration camp. A dying Nazi soldier asks for your forgiveness. What would you do?

World-famous Simon Wiesenthal recounts this real encounter and then asks, “Had he done the right thing? What would you have done in his place?” In this important book, fifty-three distinguished men and women respond to Wiesenthal’s questions. They are theologians, political leaders, writers, jurists, psychiatrists, human rights activists, Holocaust survivors, and victims of attempted genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, China and Tibet.

Originally written in German and French and later translated into English, The Sunflower is uniquely suited to our community. The book is available in multiple languages. Copies are available at Amazon.com.

The Sunflower offers a powerful framework for discussion around teshuvah (תשובה, repentance) and selichah (סְלִיחָה, forgiveness) across linguistic and cultural lines. Bookhers and the whole UJC community are invited to join us in Erev Shuvot discussions around this book and its powerful themes.
