Bookhers is a UJC member book club that chooses different novels and works of Jewish/non-Jewish non-fiction to read and discuss. Meetings are held in the Rabbi’s apartment on weekday evenings.
Looking for something good to read this summer? Here’s what the Bookhers are reading
The Book Smugglers: Partisans, Poets, and the Race to Save Jewish Treasures from the Nazis by David E. Fishman.
The Book Smugglers is the nearly unbelievable true story of Vilna ghetto residents who rescued thousands of rare books and manuscripts-first from the Nazis and then from the Soviets-by hiding them on their bodies, burying them in bunkers, and smuggling them across borders. It is a tale of heroism and resistance, of friendship and romance, and of unwavering devotion-including the readiness to risk one’s life-to literature and art.
AND
The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish
Winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award
“Kadish positions two women born centuries apart yet united by a thirst for knowledge at the core of a richly textured, addictive novel stretching back and forth through time, from contemporary London to the late seventeenth century….Kadish has fashioned a suspenseful literary tale that serves as a compelling tribute to women across the centuries committed to living, breathing, and celebrating the life of the mind.”
